![]() ![]() If using flex display, set ‘min-width’ to ‘0’. TL DR: Ensure the display is set to ‘block’ or ‘inline-block’ for your truncated text. You can try setting ‘min-width’ for your element to ‘0,’ which should do the trick. However, when using flex elements, you might need to fiddle around to get your text truncated. When the display property is set to ‘block’ or ‘inline-block,’ there shouldn’t be any problems with ‘text-overflow: ellipsis.’ However, using ‘calc()’ can sometimes produce issues of its own, so be careful when using it and make sure to check browser support for using this function.ĭisplay property can also affect if your text ends up truncated or not. The width can also be set using CSS’s ‘calc()’ function. When setting the width in percentages, all parent elements with display: flex property must have overflow:hidden TL DR: Width or max-width should be explicitly set or inherited. And also, instead of using the ‘width’ property, you can use ‘max-width.’ Most importantly, when you define your width in percentages, ensure that all parent elements with the ‘display: flex’ property have overflow set to ‘hidden.’Īgain, inheriting percentage width from elements above should work as well. However, if your parent elements use a ‘flex’ display, you might need to set some additional properties. Theoretically, it is possible to define your width in percentages since the size of the parent element will constrain width or if there is no explicit width set, the viewing window size. You might have read somewhere that using ellipsis and percentage width don’t work together, but this depends on the ‘width’ and ‘display’ properties of your parent elements. ![]() ![]() If you would like to keep your UI responsive, you might choose to define element width in percentages. Instead of setting ‘width,’ you can also set ‘max-width’ for the truncated text, which should all work the same. It also works if you use ‘width: auto’ or ‘width: inherit’ when the width of any parent elements is explicitly constrained. Depending on your requirements, you might want to use different ways of setting width, and each comes with its little special considerations.Įxplicitly setting ‘width’ or ‘max-width’ for your text element in any absolute (px, cm, pt…) or relative (em, vm, vmin, vmax…) length unit is the easiest solution and should always work. This can be the text element’s width, any parent element’s width, or even the width of the display window. The first thing to check when having issues with ‘text-overflow: ellipsis’ is whether your element is constrained to some width. TL DR: Make sure that the text you want to truncate has these three properties set: text-overflow: ellipsis white-space: nowrap overflow: hidden Width property If you are in this situation, there are multiple other things that you should pay attention to in order for ‘text-overflow: ellipsis’ to work properly. But more often than not, this is not the case, and the ellipsis still won’t work properly. However, considering that using either ‘overflow: scroll’ or ‘overflow: auto’ doesn’t make much sense in this context, the best choice is to default to ‘overflow: hidden’ when using ellipsis.Īfter setting these three properties for the text, you wish to truncate, if you are lucky enough, you might already have a working text ellipsis. Overflow value does not necessarily have to be ‘hidden.’ Using any property other than ‘overflow: visible’ should produce the desired results. The second thing which must be set is ‘overflow.’ Unless you set it explicitly to ‘hidden,’ it will likely default to ‘visible,’ rendering the ‘text-overflow’ property useless. Using only the ‘text-overflow’ property as described in this text to get the multiline ellipsis to work is impossible. Truncating multiline text with an ellipsis is an entirely different story. To produce any results, there are at least two other CSS properties you need to set properly for’ text-overflow: ellipsis.’ Firstly, the ‘white-space’ property should be set to ‘nowrap.’ This property determines the way in which long text will be wrapped in relation to whitespace characters and using ‘nowrap’ as the value will restrict the text to only one line. This is because some very specific conditions must be met in order for everything to work perfectly, so let’s dive right in and examine them. Text-overflow is a CSS property that allows an easy way to do this when its value is simply set to ‘ellipsis.’ But more often than not, developers find that ‘text-overflow: ellipsis’ is not working as expected. Typically, we need whatever is too long to be displayed nicely to be replaced by an ellipsis, which is a set of dots (…) indicating that there is the text being left out. When we deal with long text, we often want to truncate it so that it fits our UI design. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Dachshund might originate from Northern Africa, Egypt to be more precise. Look at any distinctive feature of the two or more files, such as their inode numbers, and they will be identical because they are exactly the same storage object. A hard link is simply a second (or third, or …) directory reference to exactly the same storage object. Normally, there is a one-to-one relationship between the directory entry for a file and its storage. Although symbolic links are very efficient in terms of storage, they should generally be avoided because of their fragility.įile systems contain directories of files, each of which references the data for that file in storage. Moving the symbolic link doesn’t always completely break it, though: QuickLook thumbnails and previews may still work fine, but you won’t be able to open the linked file in the Finder, for example. This includes renaming the original file, moving it, and moving the symbolic link itself. Anything which changes that directory path will break a symbolic link. Symbolic links are the most fragile of all the links available in macOS. They can only be created in Terminal, using a command of the formĪnd when listed using ls -la the directory path is conveniently displayed. ![]() As far as the user is concerned, they appear as and act like quite separate files only the file system knows how much of the data may be in common storage, and that will tend to reduce as they diverge in content with editing.Ī symbolic link is the simplest form of link to an existing file: it is just a reference containing a relative directory path to the original file. This is illustrated below.Ĭlones are completely transparent to the user. When you make changes to the data via one of those references, the data are split for the two references so that they will actually see quite different content. In a clone, the two references are actually to distinct objects in the file system. Any changes made to the data in that object are therefore reflected identically no matter which reference you use to access the data. With a hard link, two or more references in the file system are fixed to the same object in storage. When those data are changed, the file system behaves quite differently. ![]() It is a reference in the file system to a separate copy of a file, which initially refers to the same data stored on disk. Where the c option requires cloning rather than a regular copy.Īlthough a clone may appear to be like a hard link, it behaves quite differently. You can also create them in Terminal using the command They are the default means of creating a ‘copy’ when copying or duplicating files within the same volume: simply hold the Option key down when dragging the old file to its new location. These are new in APFS, and have been fully functional since macOS 10.13. They have no dependence on the original, once they have been created. You can rename and move copies around as you wish. There is no scope for saving any space on the disk: a copy takes up just the same space as the original. You then end up with an entire fresh copy of the file, which has a different inode number and is completely separate from the original. Any extended attributes are also copied within the file system metadata. Regular copies are made by macOS creating a new file, and copying the contents of the old file into that. It should be possible to do this using the normal cp command in Terminal (without the c option to clone rather than copy). There doesn’t appear to be a way of requiring this to happen when copying files within the same volume, though, which is by default performed by cloning. This is what happens when you drag and drop a file to a different volume. There are now five different types of copy/clone/alias/link: the regular copy, APFS clone (copy on write clone), symbolic link (symlink), hard link, and Finder alias. This article hopefully clarifies the types, their behaviour, and their best use in Mojave. If there’s one topic which is most likely to bring confusion it’s the different types of links and aliases available in Unix-like file systems, and macOS running on APFS is no exception. ![]() |
